Furnace not working? When to call a technician

There’s nothing worse that realizing that your furnace isn’t working in the dead of a Cleveland winter.  Not only is it uncomfortable, but it could be a hazard to pipes that can freeze and burst.  If you’re furnace isn’t working, here a three steps you can take before calling a heating and cooling technician to your home.

  1. Make sure the power is on.  It sounds simple, but we often miss the details right in front of us!  The three places you should check include your electrical panel, the switch on the furnace and the thermostat.
  2. Check the furnace filter.  Make sure that you have a fresh filter installed in your unit.  If the filter is full of dust and debris, your furnace might have overheated and shut-down as a safety precaution.
  3. Make sure the gas line is on.  The red valve (switch) should be parallel to the gas line.  If it’s perpendicular gas might not be flowing to the unit.

If these three steps don’t bring your furnace back to life, then it’s best to call a professional.  The problem may require additional expertise to repair or replace a specific part.  If it’s the dead of winter in Cleveland and your furnace isn’t working, give us a call at 440-847-9991.  We’ll be at your home as soon as possible to identify and fix the problem with your furnace.
